The Morganville Vampires, Volume 2
Morganville is such a nice place to live... And die. If you don’t mind that sort of thing.

When Claire Danvers learnt that her college town was run by vampires, she did what any intelligent, self-preserving student would do: she applied for a transfer and stocked up on garlic. The transfer is no longer an option, but that garlic may come in handy.

Now Claire has pledged herself to Amelie, the most powerful vampire in town. The protection her contract secures does little to reassure her friends. All of a sudden, people are turning up dead, a stalker resurfaces from Claire’s past, and an ancient bloodsucker extends a chilling invitation for private lessons in his secluded home. Claire Danvers has her share of challenges---like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains, dealing with the homicidal girls in her dorm, and above all, finding out that her college town is overrun with vampires. On the up side, she has a great roommate (who tends to disappear at sunup) and a new boyfriend named Shane, whose vampire-hunting dad has called in backup: cycle punks who like the idea of killing just about anything.

Now a fraternity is throwing its annual Dead Girls' Dance and---surprise!---Claire and her equally outcast best friend, Eve, have been invited. When they find out why, all hell is going to break loose. Because this time both the living and the dead are coming out---and everybody's hungry for blood.

Well I started to read these as individual books.  I even went out and grabbed the first 8 books in there mass market paperback versions.  And well those started to read much faster then the bind ups.  this one picks yo where The Dead Girls' Dance left off.  This one has a little more of the world building that we haven't really gotten and introduces some new faces.  I really am starting to love Claire she is coming into her own. And being the scared little girl she was in book one.

Ok so this is where things start to get a little ugh!  I really wish they would have gotten a different editor or something.  Because, the inconsistencies start and they don't tend to stop.  As Im writing this (as I have finished the entire series) You will have inconsistencies until book 11.  I think they finally stop there.  So if you can hang on for that long you will be out of the woods.  Well The Dead Girls' Dance of course picks up after book 3.  And things are just getting worse for those living in Morganville.  This one has a little cliff hanger.

For both books!

The Morganville Vampires, Volume 1Glass Houses                                                                    From the author of the popular Weather Warden series comes the debut of an exciting new series set in Morganville, Texas, where you would be well advised to avoid being out after dark.

College freshman Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation. When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life, but they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood. Will she be able to face the town's terror or will she drown like everyone else?                    The Dead Girls' Dance                                                        Claire Danvers has her share of challenges---like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains, dealing with the homicidal girls in her dorm, and above all, finding out that her college town is overrun with vampires. Ok this bind up is great for these two stories! Cause man if I had to have to wait for the second book I think I would be curled up in a ball crying my eyes out! Ok so Glass Houses does a wonderful job of introducing us to all the main characters in the stories. As well as some side characters that come in at book two.  I was horrified by the end of this one so again so glad that this is in a bind up. This one will leave you on the edge of your seat as you dont know who is going to survive to book two!

This one picks up where book one left off!  Which was such a great thing. Although if you have read book one you dont find out the answer to the cliff hanger for a chapter or so.  Which kinda ticked me off!  lol.  You do find out more about the vamps and about how Morganville works.  And this one doesnt leave you on the cliff of doom so much.  I also loved that even though Shane is a horndog he still will not take advantage of Claire which is great!  I really love that they Claire feels like she has known them forever!  She is part of their close nit family and they all love her like a sister (well except Shane).
It was a little on the slow side at times but not as bad as a lot of book I have read.

{Review} {Giveaway} The Pieces We Keep @KrisMcmorris

The Pieces We Keep
In this richly emotional novel, acclaimed author Kristina McMorris evokes the depth of a mother’s bond with her child, and the power of personal histories to echo through generations.
Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes’s grief over her husband’s untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying—but it’s just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him.
As Jack’s fears continue to surface in recurring and violent nightmares, Audra hardly recognizes the introverted boy he has become. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack’s dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II, and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound—and perhaps, at last, to heal.

Biography

Kristina McMorris is the recipient of more than twenty national literary awards. A host of weekly TV shows since age nine, including an Emmy® Award-winning program, she penned her debut novel, Letters from Home (Kensington Books, Avon/HarperCollins UK), based on inspiration from her grandparents' wartime courtship. This critically praised book was declared a must-read by Woman's Day magazine and achieved additional acclaim as a Reader's Digest Select Editions feature, a Doubleday/Literary Guild selection, and a 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards semifinalist for Best Historical Fiction. Her second novel, Bridge of Scarlet Leaves (March 2012), has received equally glowing reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and many others. Named one of Portland's "40 Under 40" by The Business Journal, Kristina lives with her husband and two sons in the Pacific Northwest. For more, visit http://KristinaMcMorris.com

A beautifully written story of two women, as with Kristina's other books one POV is set in the past.  But, unlike her other books one is set in the US.  This book was so wonderful!  The two stories are intertwined as the story progresses making one complete story for us to enjoy!  All the characters in the story were wonderful. Not just the two women.  From conflicts to fears and joys this book is a realistic story of friendship and loss.  This would make a great book for a book club as it includes a Reader's Guide in the back.

Tandem (Many-Worlds, #1)

You. Your best friend. Every person you know.
Many worlds. Many lives--infinite possibilities.
Welcome to the multiverse.

Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson has only ever known one small, ordinary life. When she was young, she loved her grandfather's stories of parallel worlds inhabited by girls who looked like her but led totally different lives. Sasha never believed such worlds were real--until now, when she finds herself thrust into one against her will.

To prevent imminent war, Sasha must slip into the life of an alternate version of herself, a princess who has vanished on the eve of her arranged marriage. If Sasha succeeds in fooling everyone, she will be returned home; if she fails, she'll be trapped in another girl's life forever. As time runs out, Sasha finds herself torn between two worlds, two lives, and two young men vying for her love--one who knows her secret, and one who thinks she's someone she's not.

Even though Morgan's older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. Biography

Lauren Destefano earned her BA in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing from Albertus Magnus College in Connecticut in 2007. This is her first novel.

Ok now im mad! The reason is I now have to wait an entire year to find out what happens next!  This book reminds me of another like it called Revelations by Jessica Souders as well as Breathe by Sarah Crossan.  Where they are trying to escape their worlds.

In the short I LOVED IT!  I read it in a day and I so want to read more!!  I hope to get an ARC of book two way sooner than a year from now!  But, at least I have other stories to keep my company until then.

I love how much time Destefano took in creating this new world that hangs in the sky.  It didnt bog down the story and it really made you think about what the characters are going through.  I would be one on the ship no doubt!  I have always wanted to travel the world.  I loved all the characters especially Basil whose love is unyielding even after all the world goes to crap!

I think it would be interesting to know when you were going to die like they do in this story.  That you are born you are married off and you know who you are going to be married to at a young age.  Then you do what you can for your trade and then you are basically killed off. All in around 80 years or so.

It would also be interesting to know who you are going to marry.  With them being in 10th grade they already know.  It would be neat to form ties that young.  I think in some cases it would form bonding relationships.  The only sucky thing is if your betrothed dies then you are stuck being along FOREVER and well thats just not cool.  That I couldnt live with at all.

Ok so this one is a big giantic 5 stars for me!  Now to hunt down a finished signed copy!

"Run!" the voices scream. "RUN, RISSA!"

I can barely hear them over the pounding of blood in my ears as my feet skim over the grass. I'm winded but can sense the others on my left flank, already closing in. I push my feet faster—I must get there before they do or we are lost. In the past few seconds, white netting looms in front of me like a spidery haze, just as a heavy shoulder jolts like a ton of bricks into my side. The breath is knocked out of me as over a hundred pounds of muscle collides into my side with the force of a speeding train. Adrenaline jerks along my limbs and I kick out, blindly swinging the wooden pole in my hand with all the force I can muster. There's nowhere to run, nowhere to go.

It's now or never. I have to strike first or the moment's gone.

The silence stretches into eternity as the momentum of the assault makes me keel backward, my shoulder dangling limply, and then there is nothing but the feeling of falling until the ground rushes up to meet me with an unforgiving crunch. The only sound around me is the rasp of my own labored groans combining with the wheeze of my opponent's. Her eyes are as fierce as mine.

Either way, it's over.

"GOAL!" the crowd cheers wildly just as the buzzer goes off, signaling that it's halftime. It's been one of the most intense games we've played all season. Bishop's is the top-seeded field hockey team in Southern California and if they beat us, we're out. Going into the second half of the game one goal up on them means everything. I roll to my knees, gasping as my cocaptain, center midfielder and best friend, Jenna Pearce, throws herself on top of me, screaming in unbridled delight.

"I don't know how but you did it!" she shouts in my ear. "Getting us ahead at the last minute like that. I love you so hard right now."

"Nice goal, Riss!" someone else yells. "Way to bring the fire!"

The ten-minute halftime in the guest locker room goes quickly. Coach Fenton is pleased that we're ahead, but things can change on a dime especially with a team as aggressive as Bishop's.

Coach clears his throat. "Okay, listen up. First off, great teamwork out there! Offense, follow your striker. Marin's calls on the field and her shot on goal got us here. Let's keep that drive going. Defense, you've been like a vise, let's keep that up. Pearce," he says, glancing at Jenna, "outstanding job manning the midfield line. Smith," he snaps at a tired-looking brunette. "You've been letting your opponent get ahead of you the entire first half. Get your head in the game."

"She's too fast, Coach."

He studies her, frowning. "Then Andrews is in."

Jenna pokes me in the side and raises an eyebrow. Cara Andrews—second-string right forward, former friend and my current archnemesis—has been warming the bench the entire game. She used to be starting striker on the JV team freshman year until I got bumped up from right forward sophomore year. Now she's been relegated to second string on the varsity team. I'd prefer to keep it that way, but it's the coach's call even if Jenna and I are the captains. I grit my teeth and keep my eyes on the coach. Cara's presence on and off the field makes no difference to me.

Coach Fenton takes a long look around at all the sweaty, tired faces in the room. "Keep the momentum going, you earned it with blood and sweat. Don't lose it now. We have a thirty-five-minute half to prove ourselves—show this team that the first half was just a taste of what we can do. Don't take on any bad fouls and play a clean game. We're the underdogs. Let's own it. Come on, everybody hands in! Bring this home! Fighters on three—one, two, three…"

"Fighters!" we all yell in unison.

We troop fiercely onto the field, pumped full of adrenaline and courage. But by the time we're three-quarters of the way through the second half, I'm so winded that I can barely breathe, and that's saying a lot for me. The score is still one-zero with less than a quarter regulation time to go. We have to hold them off for seven more minutes. I glance down the field where Jenna and the center midfielder from Bishop's are faced off in a bully. They thump the ground, then tap their sticks against each other and it's on.

"Kate," I yell to my left forward. "Watch your mark! If the ball comes to you, pass it to me or back to Jenna."

"Got it."

Jenna wins the ball and passes to one of her wingmen, who takes it up the right side of the field. Keeping my eye on my opponent, I charge up the middle just as my teammate passes Kate the ball. As instructed, she sends it my way, but within seconds, I am stormed by three defensive players from Bishop's in some kind of blitz attack.

Dimly, I hear Coach Fenton screaming at me from the sidelines. "Pass it to Andrews, Marin! Andrews is wide-open!

Marin, ANDREWS!"

Cara is indeed wide-open, but hell will freeze over before I pass her the ball. I can get the shot without her, even with the blitz. Ignoring the shouts from other teammates and my coach, I shove through the defensive line with otherworldly agility. They're on me like glue and Cara is still open, but I've got the shot that will seal our victory.

My triumph is short-lived as one of the midfielders on the other team sweeps the ball out from under my nose and drives it back up the field, striking it down to her offensive line. Our collective breath stops as their striker takes her shot on goal with seconds to spare before the end of the game. If they score, our chances of holding them off in overtime are slim.

The ball flies through the air as our goalie makes a superhuman dive to the right, taking the hit on her right shoulder and deflecting the shot. Relief floods through me as the buzzer sounds, ending the game. High-fiving Kate, I turn to face a furious Jenna.

"What the hell was that?" Jenna hisses.

"What?"

"Out there with Cara. You nearly cost us the game. If it were any player but her, you would have passed the ball, and you know it."

"I had the shot," I say, ignoring my sudden surge of anger. "You didn't have a shot."

"We won, didn't we?"

"That's not the point, Rissa. We play as a team. And everyone saw what you did out there."

"No one cares. We won."

But someone does care. I feel the weight of Coach Fen-ton's stare all the way through the handshakes with the other team. He's not happy that I ignored him, but it was my call on the field. I stand by it. He doesn't say anything as I raise my chin in a half-defiant gesture and walk past him to hug our ecstatic goalie.

With a twinge, I see that she clutches her right shoulder on contact. "You okay, Sarah?"

"Best case, bruised. Worst case, dislocated. But either way, totally worth it."

I meet Jenna's eyes, the question in them clear. Was it?

Shrugging, I turn away and, in the next moment, Sarah and I are both picked up and carried along in a tide of girls toward the sidelines, where the bus is waiting to ferry us all back to school. The cheering is deafening for the ten-minute ride and continues into our own locker room. The only girl with a scowl on her face is Cara, but I refuse to let her ruin this moment for me.

"Nice job, Fighters," Coach Fenton says after we shower and gather in the middle of the outer room. "That was close, but you did it. You stayed strong and won us the game. And that kind of teamwork is what makes us Fighters." He doesn't make eye contact with me, but for the briefest of seconds I feel that the last part of his sentence about teamwork is directed my way. I shake it off as a new wave of cheering and hollering makes its way around the room.

"Have a great weekend, team," Coach Fenton says. "You deserve it. See you at practice on Monday."

Grabbing my gym bag on the way out, I join in the whooping as the revelry spills into the hallway. Even with the near-miss, you couldn't wipe the smiles off everyone's faces—making it to the semifinals is a huge deal for a prep school that hasn't been in the Spring Hockey Tournament playoffs for more than a decade. I'd been recruited into the game during my second day as a freshman at Dover Prep. As much as I hate to admit it, I have Cara to thank for that. Back when we used to be friends, we'd been joined at the hip and she'd insisted that we try out together. We'd both made the JV team—she as striker, and me as right forward. To me, it'd been a way to pass the time.

The plain truth is I can't participate in any competitive water sports, even though swimming is more my thing than hockey. My guardians warned me about that, and at the time I'd yet to figure out what else I might enjoy. Field hockey fit the bill as well as any other sport, and two and a half years later, I'd become quite good.

More than good, a sneaky inner voice whispers. Starting striker on the varsity team as a junior is pretty much unheard of.

I acknowledge it with a smug grin. My natural athleticism isn't a curse—it's a gift. As long as I'm careful and don't draw undue attention to myself, it's a bonus. And it isn't like swimming where I can clock a fifty-foot pool in less than ten seconds, almost half the time of the Olympic world record for freestyle, or hold my breath indefinitely. A smile curls my lip upward—technically I'm not holding my breath, but nobody really knows that.

{Review} How to Love @KATIECOTUGNO

How to Love
Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember: as natural as breathing, as endless as time. But he’s never seemed to notice that Reena even exists…until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears from their humid Florida town without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter, Hannah. Reena’s gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she’s finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. Reena doesn’t want anything to do with him, though she’d be lying if she said Sawyer’s being back wasn’t stirring something in her. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

In this breathtaking debut, Katie Cotugno weaves together the story of one couple falling in love—twice.
Katie CotugnoKatie Cotugno went to Catholic school for thirteen years which makes her, as an adult, both extremely superstitious and prone to crushes on boys wearing blazers. She routinely finds herself talking about the romantic endeavors of characters on TV shows as if they actually exist in the world.

Katie is a Pushcart Prize nominee whose work has appeared in The Broadkill Review, The Apalachee Review, and Argestes, as well as on Nerve.com. Her first novel, HOW TO LOVE, is due out from Balzer + Bray on October 1st, 2013.

The great loves of Katie's life include child's pose, her little sister, and mozzarella and honey sandwiches. She lives in Boston (and in sin) with her boyfriend, Tom.

Ok this review is going to be very short!  This is a very confilicted book.  Yup thats all im saying!  I didnt love it, but I didnt hate it.  Ergo the three stars.  This is just one of those books that you will have to grab and read for yourself.

The Official How to Love Playlist By Katie Cotugno

From Joni Mitchell to Leann Rimes to Te Vaka, I listened to all of it while I wrote this book. Songs that fit the story, songs I thought Sawyer and Reena might like, songs that just plain gave me a lot of Big Feelings. Here are a few that are still in heavy rotation:
1. “Down in the Valley” by the Head and the Heart
Live music plays such an important role in How to Love, and the Head and the Heart puts on maybe the best live show I’ve ever seen. This track in particular is such a Sawyer song to me.
2. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” by Bob Dylan, performed by Miley Cyrus
This is a Bob Dylan song, but I have to say that Miley’s version is my very fave. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome” is a song about knowing you’re going to get left behind and not being able to do a single thing to stop it.
3. “So Far Around the Bend” by the National
I mean, if “I know you’re a serious lady” isn’t a perfect description of Reena, I don’t know what is.
4. “I Dream of Chicago” by Parlours
This one’s a traveling song, and a beautiful one.
5. “Reunion” by Indigo Girls
“Reunion” always makes me think of Reena’s relationship with her family—both the Monteros and the LeGrandes—especially the lines “I have no need for anger with intimate strangers/I have nothing to hide.”
6. “Poison and Wine” by the Civil Wars
This one’s about a good/bad love affair, and it aches.
7. “Bring It on Home to Me” by Sam Cooke, performed by Tony Lucca
This song is actually mentioned by name in the book. It’s a Sam Cooke song, but the Tony Lucca cover is the sexiest. It’s just science.
8. “All This and Heaven Too” by Florence and the Machine
In my head, “All This and Heaven Too” is Reena’s theme song. To me, at least, it’s about a smart girl trying to figure out, you know—how to love.

This is a book that just fell apart.  It was a DNF for me as they are in a reality game.  Where its a complete the task and live or a fail and die.  And as for me I like Article 5 by Kristen Simmons much better.  At one point, Rogan says, "I never said it made sense. None of it does..." I couldn't agree more.

It's called nyctophobia. I looked it up once. It's the official term for an abnormal and persistent fear of the dark. I've had it ever since my parents and sister were murdered during an in-home burglary while I hid under my bed.

In the dark I couldn't see anything; all I could hear was the screaming.

And then the silence.

So, yeah. I've been scared like hell of the dark ever since. Go figure.

Unfortunately, that's where I found myself when I opened my eyes. Frankly, I didn't remember closing them. I'd been in the mall, I remembered that much. I'd just lifted a new pair of shoes—my old pair was worn out since all I do is walk everywhere in the city, day in and day out. This pair was nice. Red. With strong laces that, if necessary, could double as a weapon.

The streets were tough sometimes. Especially at night. Especially in the dark.

Like right now.

But this wasn't the street, I knew that much. I was inside. Somewhere.

Choking panic began to flood my body. I knew freaking out wouldn't help, but sometimes you can't stop yourself—or reason with yourself—when you're in the process of freaking out.

I felt a pinch at my right wrist and reached over with my other hand, trying to feel my way through the inky blackness. It was a metal cuff. Attached to a chain. Attached to the smooth, cold metal wall behind me.

What the hell is going on?

Had I been caught shoplifting? Was this prison? I wracked my brain to try to remember being arrested, but came up blank. No, I'd grabbed the shoes, shoved them under my coat, and left the store to go into the half-abandoned mall where I'd put them on and thrown my old ones in a garbage can. And then…then what happened?

I remembered wanting to grab some food. I'd had two bucks to my name, so I'd figured I could buy a small order of French fries at one of the few restaurants that were still open. That would last me a day before my stomach would start complaining again.

Had I even made it to the food court?

I couldn't have. I was still hungry. Starving. My body felt as if it was eating itself, but that was a bit of an exaggeration, I guess. Yesterday I'd had an entire meal. Ordered off the menu even, and then tried to skip out before the bill came. The owner of the diner had caught me, reprimanded me, and I'd figured that that was it—he'd call the cops.

Instead, he'd taken pity on me and made me wash dishes.

It was a humbling experience, but I'd had a lot of those since my family died.

In the end, I appreciated his kindness. Washing dishes was a whole lot better than getting arrested.

Okay, breathe, Kira, I told myself. And I did. I took a deep breath in through my nose and let it out through my mouth. My heart thudded hard in my ears.

Why couldn't I remember what had happened after I'd taken the shoes? Damn it. And where was I?

I seriously had to calm down. This wasn't helping.

I took another breath in and out and forced myself to listen. For anything. There had to be something other than this total silence that told me absolutely nothing helpful.

And then I heard…something. I pushed my fears out of the way as best I could and strained my ears.

Breathing. I could hear soft breathing.

Someone else is in the room.

This realization did not ease my mind. Just the opposite. The thought that somebody was in the darkness with me scared me enough that I almost started to cry.

But I was tough now. At least that's what I tried to tell myself every morning when I woke up to face another day. This shouldn't be any different.

"H-h-hello?" Stuttering does not help the situation, I thought. "Who's there?"

The breathing hitched. I heard something heavy shift against the floor about fifteen feet away.

Then the something spoke. "Wh…what the hell?"

A guy's voice. His words were gruff and raspy as if he'd just woken from a deep sleep.

"Who are you?" I ventured again.

Why did I sound so weak? I hated that. He cleared his throat and groaned. "Shit." Well, he did seem to have a fine command of the English language.

I strained to see something, but there was only black. "Tell me who you are."

There was a pause, and then another groan. It actually sounded like a moan of pain as I heard him shift position again.

I frowned. "Hey, are you okay?"

He snorted. "Fantastic. I'm just fantastic, thanks for asking. And you?"

Sarcasm. Yeah, I recognized that. "I've been better, actually."

Chains rattled. Not mine, so that meant that this guy was also restrained. But why?

"I'm Rogan," he said after a moment. "So pleased to meet you."

"Where are we?"

"I tell you my name and you don't reciprocate? Didn't your mother teach you any manners?"

"My mother's dead."

That shut him up. Momentarily. "Sorry to hear that."

"It was a long time ago."

"Doesn't make it any easier."

Very true. Two years. Felt like forever—yet, at the same time, it felt like only yesterday. "My name's Kira."

"Well, Kira, where we are is anyone's guess." I pressed back against the hard wall.

We could be anywhere, and there wasn't a damn thing to give me a clue where that was. Except for the main drags, the city was so vacant that we could be in any one of dozens of abandoned warehouses or factories. And nobody would ever find us.

I'd heard about kids who'd vanished from the streets never to be seen again. I was sure they weren't stories with happy endings.

"What's the last thing you remember?" I asked. "Who brought you here? Are you chained, too?"

"I don't know who brought me here. And, yeah, I'm locked up real tight."

"Who would do this?" My voice caught on the words.

"Try to relax."

"I'm relaxed."

"Doesn't sound like it to me."

I banged the back of my head lightly against the metal wall and hugged my knees in close to my chest. "You sound relaxed enough for the both of us."

"What can I say? So far this is a lot better than where I was scheduled to go in a few days."

"Oh? And where's that?"

He was silent for a moment. "You really want to know?"

Not really. I didn't care. "Sure."

There was another lengthy pause. "Saradone."

My blood ran cold. Saradone was the maximum security prison just outside the city limits. Only the worst criminals were sent there; some for life, most for death. Horrible people who'd done horrible things. Luckily, they didn't put girls who stole shoes there…yet.

He laughed at my answering silence. "Guess you've heard of it."

I was in the same room with somebody bound for Sara-done—so that meant he was dangerous. Criminally dangerous. Panic returned to swirl through me, constricting my chest, my breath.

Both of us were chained. What was this? What was going on?

A cold trickle of sweat slid down my back.

"Why were you going there?" I tried to make the question sound flippant, as if I was making conversation about the weather.

"My days at St. Augustine's end in a couple days when I turn eighteen."

St. Augustine's. That name I also knew. It was a juvenile detention hall located on the west side of the city. If I ever got arrested, that might be where I ended up.

I'd heard that it was hell.

I hesitated to ask, but couldn't help myself. "What were you at St. Augustine's for?"

"Murder," he answered simply.

"Oh." My stomach churned as I tested the chains again. They were too strong. I wasn't going anywhere. "Was it self-defense?"

"No." There was a sharp edge to his voice now. "But what do you care?"

"I don't."

But I did. Of course, I did. I cared because I was trapped in this room with an admitted murderer—stuck in the dark with him, just as I'd been when my family was murdered.

Maybe I was just having a really bad dream. Maybe I'd fallen and hit my head in the mall and was passed out cold in front of the understaffed burger place in the food court. Maybe some gorgeous rich kid would find me. He'd fall instantly in love with me, kiss me like Prince Charming did with Snow White, wake me from my deep sleep, and we'd ride away into the sunset, away from my past and into a bright, exciting future, just the two of us.

I blinked against the darkness.

No, I was awake. Definitely awake.

Too bad.

"You're quiet all of a sudden," Rogan said. "Don't want to talk anymore?"

"Not particularly."

"Why not? Because you're scared of me now?" Pretty much, but I wasn't going to let him know that if I could help it.

"No. Mostly because I've decided that you don't know anything that can help me."

"Doesn't mean you have to be rude."

"Rude?" I felt a flare of anger and then settled back, trying to remain calm. My ass hurt from sitting on the hard metal floor so I shifted to cross my legs. "Yeah, I'm so rude. Sorry about that. I guess you've been treated so nice at St. Augustine's that my behavior's a real shocker. Besides, sounds to me like you deserve rude. Or worse."

He was silent so long that I felt even more uncomfortable than I had been to start with.

"And are you so innocent if you're here with me right...

{Review} Resist @SarahCrossan

Resist (Breathe, #2)
The sequel—and conclusion—to Sarah Crossan's Breathe. Three teen outlaws must survive on their own in a world without air, exiled outside the glass dome that protects what's left of human civilization. Gripping action, provocative ideas, and shocking revelations in a dystopian novel that fans of Patrick Ness and Veronica Roth will devour.

Bea, Alina, and Quinn are on the run. They started a rebellion and were thrown out of the pod, the only place where there's enough oxygen to breathe. Bea has lost her family. Alina has lost her home. And Quinn has lost his privileged life. Can they survive in the perilous Outlands? Can they finish the revolution they began? Especially when a young operative from the pod's Special Forces is sent after them. Their only chance is to stand together, even when terrible circumstances force them apart. When the future of human society is in danger, these four teens must decide where their allegiances lie. Sarah Crossan has created a dangerous, and shattered society in this wrenching, thought-provoking, and unforgettable post-apocalyptic novel.

This one is a sad review!  I ate up Breathe last year when I got it to review.  And I just couldnt wait for book two.  Well it seems that this is not a trilogy but a duology which is fine.  But this one ends with loss and grief.  And although I did care about what happened to the characters I just didnt feel that I cared enough.  This one just wasnt as good as book one.

The Beginning

Book Description

 August 27, 2013
Long after the Iron Curtain has crumbled, an invisible wall remains between the good citizens of Berlin and those who dwell in the city’s dark underbelly. And one family—the Bentheims—straddles the line between good and evil.

Together, the boys explore the office where their cold, distant father, Xavier Bentheim, writes his novels. They discover a secret door, an underground lair, gruesome photographs, bizarre films, and horrifying scenes. Is this shadowy world the reason Xavier’s behavior has taken a turn for the vicious—and will they ever be able to escape what they’ve seen?
Berlin Police Inspector Konstantin Butz discovers the mutilated corpse of a woman; beside her lies a power drill freshly wrenched from her stomach. This one grabbed my attention via Night Owl Reviews.  And I am sad to say that it fell so short that I really dont even want to review it.  The cover and story is what grabbed me.  But after reading it you find that there is no story.  This is a first of 7 books to come and it is deff. written that way.  By the end of this book you have met some characters, passed back and forth across a 12 year span of their lives, and had some great seances.  Nothing is revealed and nothing is resolved.  I dont know when the others are to be released but I do know that this book is not something that I would wait around for a year for.
