Beautiful Creatures: NO MORE!

1

A love story set in an enigmatic Southern town, warring magical sects, and a powerful legacy that will determine a teen’s destiny: could it be the recipe for the next YA series-turned-movie blockbuster? The Warner Brothers/Alcon Entertainment film, based on the first book in the Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, is headed to the big screen on February 14.
Beautiful Creatures centers on 16-year-old Ethan Wate (played in the film by Alden Ehrenreich), who can’t wait to leave confining, small-town life in Gatlin, S.C. But when an intriguing outsider enrolls at his high school, his life is forever altered. As romance blooms between Lena (played by newcomer Alice Englert) and Ethan, Lena reveals that she descends from a line of Casters, beings who can yield powerful magic, and that she will face a critical transformation on the occasion of her 16th birthday. Directed by Richard LaGravenese, the cast includes Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, and Emma Thompson.

Vampires vs. Casters: A Showdown?
Of late, film studios have made no secret of the fact that they’re on the prowl for new YA properties that achieve Twilight-level success. As such, comparisons between Beautiful Creatures and its paranormal predecessor seem inevitable – and there are a few similarities. Both series are published by Little, Brown. Both center on love stories between teens who are irresistibly drawn toward each other. One of the teens in each book has a secret, supernatural identity. Both take place in small towns, and both female protagonists happen to drive big clunker cars. Come to think of it, both books build romantic tension via scenes involving vehicular accident close shaves. Despite certain parallels, LaGravenese insisted to Movieline that Beautiful Creatures is not Twilight: “I’m sorry, it’s just not. I mean, yes, it’s a love story and one of them has powers, but that’s it.”

What made you choose to write a series from a teenage boy’s POV?
Most of the YA novels we read in 2005 were written from a girl’s POV, unless they were novels specifically targeting boys. We wanted to write something that felt different, and writing from a boy’s POV was one way to do it. We also wanted the girl to be the powerful Supernatural. Making our protagonist a Mortal boy allowed us to turn the tables. In the end, I think it was easier. With have six brothers between us, we know that guys struggle with many of the same insecurities girls do: Will the person I like call/ go out with me/feel the same way? Should I follow my parents’ path or my own. These are obviously tough questions whether you are a boy or a girl.

Who’s your favorite character?
It’s a toss up between Amma and Ridley. I love Amma because she reminds me of my great-grandmother from North Carolina who lived with us from the time I was twelve. She was brilliant and brave and ornery, and she baked a mean lemon meringue pie. I also relate to Amma because I’m insanely superstitious. I’ve changed hotel rooms because my room number had a “13″ in it (yes, 113 counts), I would never step on a grave, and I have a special charm necklace I wear when I fly. I love Ridley because underneath all the outrageous outfits, sarcastic comments, and lollipops, she is deeply flawed. Even though she’s a Caster, there are times when Ridley seems more vulnerable than any other character. At her core, she’s a girl who has to live with the consequences of a choice she didn’t get to make. Is there anything more tragic?

Now that you’ve been on set and seen your characters “come to life”, are you happy with who’s been cast?
I think the cast is PERFECT! Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson—it’s like a dream. And the actors playing the teens in the film: Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann, Zoey Deutch, and Kyle Gallner ARE Ethan, Lena, Ridley, Link, Emily, and Larkin. Equally impressive, they went going toe-to-toe with Academy Award winning/nominated actors and nailed it!

Any scenes in particular that you are most looking forward to seeing translated to the big screen?
There are so many… the first time Ethan sees Lena at school, and the moment she tells him her secret. Alden and Alice have serious chemistry. I’m also dying to see the disciplinary meeting when Macon faces off with Mrs. Lincoln. It’s a powerful scene in the book, and in the film it involves a showdown between Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson. Let me repeat that: JEREMY IRONS AND EMMA THOMPSON! The only thing as exciting? Watching Jeremy Irons and VIOLA DAVIS when they **** ** *** *****!

Is it difficult letting go of your words and trusting them with a screenplay writer?
The novel is the world we created and the film is Richard LaGravenese’s interpretation and extension of that universe. Richard is an incredibly gifted and well-respected screenwriter, with an eye for the details that breathe life into a story. He has managed to create a script that both honors the novel and expands upon it.

Stephenie Meyer was a producer on the final Twilight films, would you like to play a role in the making of any of the future Beautiful Creatures films?
In addition to my career as a novelist, I’m also a film producer, and one of my roles is to work with novelists, screenwriters, and directors to strike that balance. Richard LaGravenese, our screenwriter/director, and the team at Alcon and Warner Brothers bringing Beautiful Creatures to the big screen is amazing. If they need me to play a bigger role on future films (the good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise), I will do whatever I can to make it happen.

Ok I tried so hard so VERY HARD to love this book.  I wanted to read it before the movie comes out next month. Well with over 200 pages left I just had to call it quits.  It was so long and so boring.  This book had so much promise but it just turned out to be another overhyped ya book.  UGH.  It was nice to have a book written by the male POV.  It was a very good story but it just wasn't told very well.  They could have cut the length down to around 300 pages and sped it up just a little.  There was a lot of humor in the book but that just wasn't enough to keep me interested. This will be one series that I will not read anymore.  But I will go watch the movie.  Hopefully its better than the book for a change.

Review: The Dead and Buried

A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost make this one unforgettable thriller.

But then things begin happening. Strange, otherworldly things.

Jade's little brother claims to see a glimmering girl in his room. Jade's jewelry gets moved around, as if by an invisible hand. Kids at school whisper behind her back like they know something she doesn't.

Soon, Jade must face an impossible fact: that her perfect house . . . is haunted.

Haunted by a ghost who's seeking not just vengeance, but the truth. The ghost of a girl who ruled Jade's school -- until her untimely death last year. It's up to Jade to put the pieces together before her own life is at stake. As Jade investigates the mystery, she discovers that her new friends in town have more than a few deep, dark secrets.

Book Description

April 24, 2012 Jordan Sandor
THE ENEMY HAS A THOUSAND WAYS TO STRIKE. WE HAVE JUST ONE WAY TO RETALIATE. HIS NAME IS JORDAN SANDOR.In Targets of Deception, which suspense master Robert K. Tanenbaum called “a fast-paced thriller,” Jeffrey Stephens introduced CIA agent Jordan Sandor, whom bestselling author Steve Alten praised as “terrific.” Now Sandor is back, playing for bigger stakes and facing deadlier challenges.
Whisked from his Manhattan town house to a gabled CIA safe house in Virginia, Sandor faces off with a top terrorist agent from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. In exchange for protection from his own side, Ahmad Jaber is offering the CIA explosive information: word of a secret, unholy alliance forged among operatives in the Middle East, a ruthless South American, and Kim Jong-Il’s North Korea. Jaber claims not to know specific details, only that the strike will target the heart of America.
The fanatics stage a stunning diversion in the Caribbean, mercilessly downing a passenger jet and unleashing an assault on a French intelligence installation. Sandor, however, has already moved in a different direction. Leveraging Jaber’s infor-mation, he assembles a small strike force to penetrate North Korea. The team knows they will not all return, but the intel they gather will be vital to American security. What they ultimately discover plunges Sandor into a frantic race against time, struggling to defeat a shadowy figure—a master terrorist with a plan of destruction so perfectly disguised that even with the new knowledge he has gathered, Sandor cannot guess where or how he will strike.
As a storm rages in the Gulf of Mexico, word comes that two submarines have penetrated U.S. waters. With the U.S. military hampered by the hurricane, Sandor turns to a few daring U.S. Navy SEALs to duel with the enemy they cannot see . . . for now they know only that there are two nuclear weapons aimed at a target of opportunity whose destruction would change the world order forever.
Brilliantly conceived, electrifyingly paced, Targets of Opportunity captures a terrifying twenty-first century reality: terrorists can—and will—try as many times as they need to attack the United States. For the brave men and women who defend our country, failure is not an option.

Setsubun
In Japan, Setsubun means "dividing the season,' and this tradition involves throwing roasted soybeans while shorting "In with good luck, out with demons!" This is a kind of symbolic spring cleaning ritual.  Today perform this ritual in order to clear negativiity from your environment. Visualize the end of winter and the beginning of spring (even though it's a but early in most areas).  Imagine the soybean bringing good health and vitality while chasing away any unwanted energy. You can freely toss soybeans around your home and yard, if you'd like, or choose a more methodical approach. Place a bean in each room, and as you set it in place, use this chant:
Bring good fortune to this place.
Purge all harm without a trace.

 January 16, 2013
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl's pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers--precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mother's mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice's tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice's mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Author Thursday: Sadie Grubor

Today we have author Sadie Grubor thanks again to The Cover Contessa along with Never Too Old for YA Books on Goodreads, are excited to welcome author Sadie Grubor for an interview.

Here are Sadie's books:

And here's a little about Sadie!
Sadie Grubor has always had an active imagination and creative streak. Having written stories and journal upon journal of soul exposure throughout her years, it still comes as a surprise when people actual want to read and enjoy her work.
A self-proclaimed, foul-mouthed, book nerd, who loves reading genres ranging from Young Adult to Horror to Erotica, she embraces her Computer Geekdom through the Internet. You can find her on FaceBook, Twitter - @SadieGrubor, and her website - http://www.sadiegrubor.webs.com
Sadie Grubor is the adult-alter author of Young Adult Writer, Saewod Tice.

So Let's hear what Sadie had to say in answer to our questions:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I didn't really realize I wanted to be a writer. I can honestly say it just happened. I've always enjoyed writing. Growing up I kept journals documenting my thoughts and feelings, small stories, poems, and doodles. It sort of morphed into writing stories for kids, for my kids. Then I started to want more from stories I read, or got ideas, and began to write.

How long does it take you to write a book?
It depends on the time I have on my hands and inspiration. I've written a book in a week and I have others that I've been working on for a couple years.

What do you think makes a great story?
This is something that differs for just about everyone – according to their taste. But I truly believe that, no matter the genre, you have to write something that makes you feel. Whether it's desire, romance, sadness, horror, if you feel it when you write it, then it will come across to the reader in your work.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Since I'm the mother of two, full time day job working, wife to one handsome geek, my schedule is erratic and crazy. I try to sit down and allot time for writing, but this doesn't usually work out.

How do you balance family and writing?
As for how to balance, I'm not so sure I have balancing down yet. The writing time does suffer and often lose. Family comes first. My kids and husband mean the world to me. My writing is typically done late in the evening/night.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
The internet is my largest tool. Google provides me such an extensive pool of information to research.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That people would actually enjoy reading them. Like really, really like my books and be interested enough to want to read more of them. I'm still surprised when someone reaches out to tell me how much they enjoyed the book and want more. It's extremely flattering and fulfilling.

How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?
Written and published works would be four. Under author name Saewod Tice, I released a Young Adult post apocalyptic book titled Amongst the Ruins. This was my first published work. Second, came Live-In Position by VS Tice. This is a romantic chick-lit style book that was published before my Sadie Grubor personal was fully developed. Then came the self published books, Falling Stars & Stellar Evolution under Sadie Grubor. I have multiple completed books which are with BETA readers, proofers, and/or editors. On top of those, I have a few unfinished manuscripts that I'm still working through the development.

Are your characters based on anyone you know?
I do draw inspiration from people around me. Though, I've never truly had one character replicate someone I know.

Do you have a favourite place you love to write?
Wherever I can focus and listen to my music. Music is a big inspirational piece for me.

How hard is it to get published?
Being published is not a simple task in any regard. I got extremely lucky with my first book and was picked up really quickly; however, I've got a large file full of rejection letters from publishers. It takes time, dedication, a thick skin, and a willingness to take advice and feedback. Even self publishing is a challenging task. You have only yourself to rely on and only you to take the heat for negative responses.

What do your family and friends think about your books?
I'm thankful to have amazing friends and family. They are one hundred percent supportive of everything I do. They also harass me frequently for the next book and such.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I'm an avid horror flick watching woman. And I have a penchant for horrible B films. Heck even C & D films. LOL Netflix, Hulu and I seem to have a special understanding. Reading, of course, is a huge part of my life. Romance, Science fiction, Horror, Erotica, I'll pretty much give anything a shot as long as the writing is good.

Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft?
If so, what are they? You will be constantly learning. Grow a thick skin, and stay open to the criticism and critique. Learn from your mistakes. These are the biggest things I've learned.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
Wonder Woman. Then it was the Phoenix from Xmen. Yeah, so I had a bit of a nerdy comic book childhood.

What are your favourite books and which authors inspire you?
Asking me to list my favorite books is like asking me to pick my favorite kid. (LOL) Short List of Authors (this too is painful): Stephen King (twisted scares are amazing) Lisa Kleypas (she gives good regency) RL Mathewson (take care of yourself girl!) Alice Clayton (her humor is the best) Richard Laymon (gory horror and taboo horror at its finest) Kristen Ashley (for so many wonderful reasons) Truly there are so many that I could go on and on and on – and ON.

For an aspiring writer what do you feel are certain do's and don’ts for getting their material published? DO listen to critiques. DON’T let criticism get to you. I've seen many authors fall into the trap of reacting to bad reviews or comments. This will get you put on a do not read list so fast, regardless if the bad reviewer or criticizer was originally in the wrong. The trick is to either ignore the criticism all together by not reading them. Or, if you're skin is thick enough and you can restrain from lashing out, read and see if you can learn anything from them. Or at least get a good laugh from them. DO stand by your work. DON'T let a publisher or editor change the core of your story. This actually almost happened to me with Falling Stars. The publisher that originally had this manuscript wanted me to change Christopher to make him more likable. They also wanted me to cut the story so that Chris and Mia were together faster. We went back and forth with FS and it was pushed back a couple times. I was lucky enough to have the story released back to me, so I could publish it myself.

What are you working on now?
I'm working on the next Falling Stars novel: Hidden in the Stars. This tale will follow Jackson after Stellar Evolution. I won't say too much, just in case you haven't read the follow-up novella. This is in the writing phase, though I will say that I've been distracted with ideas for the possibility of another story to follow Jacksons. There are also two more manuscripts with editors, proofers and BETA readers. My editor has my marriage of convenience book in her hands – the Modern Arrangement series. She has book one out of the three. Then I have another book with a BETA and proof reader. I'm planning on a busy 2013.
