#BookDiscussion: The Art of Loving or Leaving a Book

As book lovers, we’ve all been there—picking up a book with high expectations, only to find ourselves stuck halfway through, questioning whether to push forward or give up. Today, let’s dive into a topic that resonates with every reader: When do you decide to keep reading, and when do you call it quits?

The "Keep Going" Argument

There’s something to be said for perseverance. Some of the best plot twists and character arcs happen when you least expect them. A slow beginning might give way to a gripping climax, and what initially seems like dull world-building could later become essential context.

Reasons to Keep Reading:

  • It’s a slow burn: If you’ve heard that a book takes a while to build momentum but becomes amazing later, it might be worth the effort.

  • Highly recommended: Friends or trusted reviewers swear by it, even if it starts off weak.

  • Curiosity: You can’t stop wondering how it will all turn out. (this one has gotten me so many times)

The "Let It Go" Perspective

Life is too short to read books that don’t spark joy. Sometimes, putting a book down is the best decision you can make for your reading journey. There’s no shame in it!

Reasons to DNF (Did Not Finish):

  • Lack of connection: You just don’t care about the characters or plot.

  • Poor writing: If the prose feels clunky or repetitive, it might not improve.

  • Offensive content: Anything that makes you deeply uncomfortable without purpose.

  • Reading slump warning: If forcing yourself through a book is making you dread reading altogether, it’s time to move on.

Finding Balance

Sometimes, taking a break instead of outright quitting can make a difference. Revisit the book after reading something light and fun. You might find a fresh perspective or renewed interest.
