#BookishDiscussion: Tell Us About the Books You WISH Existed!

Bookish Discussion: Tell Us About the Books You WISH Existed!

As readers, we often get lost in the pages of a book, imagining what could be next, or wishing for a story that would capture our hearts in just the right way. Sometimes, there’s a gap in the book world—one where the book we really want to read doesn’t yet exist. Whether it’s a niche genre, a unique plot twist, or a character dynamic we’ve never seen before, there are always books we dream about but have yet to find.

So, let’s talk about it: What are the books you wish existed? Here are some ideas to get the conversation started: Know any books that match these prompts?  Let us know in the comments!!

1. A Historical Fantasy Featuring Strong Female Warriors

I’ve always wanted to read a book that blends history with fantasy, featuring real historical events but with magical elements added in. Think medieval battles mixed with secret societies of female warriors who wield elemental magic. The perfect mix of history, magic, and fierce women.

2. A Slow-Burn Romance Between Rival Fantasy Authors

Imagine a story where two authors, both from rival magical kingdoms, must collaborate on writing a book together for the good of their people. The catch? They can’t stand each other. And yet, as they spend more time together, the slow-burn romance grows, and they begin to realize that maybe, just maybe, their rivalry could lead to something more.

3. A YA Fantasy With a Non-Binary Protagonist

There’s been a strong push for more diverse representation in literature, and one thing I’d love to see more of is a YA fantasy novel with a non-binary protagonist who embarks on a magical journey. A story that focuses not just on the magical elements of the world, but also on exploring identity, self-discovery, and the idea of breaking free from societal labels.

4. A Fantasy Romance Set in a City of Floating Islands

Why hasn’t anyone written a fantastical love story set in a floating city? A world with islands floating in the sky, connected by magical bridges and ancient spells. Throw in a forbidden romance between two people from opposing islands—maybe one is a sky pirate, and the other is an elite royal—add in some sky battles, and you’ve got an epic story.

5. A Sci-Fi Novel With Intergalactic Found Family

I love stories that feature a “found family” dynamic, but what about a sci-fi novel where a ragtag group of travelers from different planets forms an unlikely bond? Maybe they’re all wanted fugitives, or maybe they’re searching for something—a cure, a lost artifact, or a new home—and along the way, they learn to rely on each other and become family in the truest sense.

6. A Book That Takes Place in a Parallel Universe Where Books Are the Ultimate Power

Imagine a world where books hold the key to ultimate power. Some people are born with the ability to summon creatures from stories, others can control time through historical fiction, and a small group holds the secret to navigating different worlds. There’s a hidden war among bookkeepers and scholars, and our protagonist has just discovered that they hold the key to unlocking a new world, or destroying it.

7. A Mystery Novel with a Protagonist Who Can Speak to Animals

I love mysteries, and I love animals, so why not a detective story where the protagonist can communicate with animals? They’re trying to solve a crime, and their best allies are a dog who can sense emotions, a crow who knows every piece of gossip in the city, and a cat who always seems to be a step ahead of everyone.

8. A Story Where Fantasy Creatures Get Their Own Point of View

We’ve seen it done with vampires and werewolves, but what about real fantasy creatures—like dragons, griffins, or faeries? A book where the creatures of myth and legend tell their own story, offering a completely different perspective on the world of magic and adventure. Imagine a dragon who’s trying to protect their homeland from a new breed of magical creatures, or a fae who’s caught in a political plot among the courts.

9. A Magic-Realism Story Set in a Contemporary Setting with an LGBTQ+ Romance

I would love to read a story where a small, seemingly mundane town holds a massive secret—magic exists, but only for a select few. And in this small town, there’s a quiet, unexpected romance between two people who discover that they share the rare ability to manipulate reality. A bit of magic realism, a bit of mystery, and a lot of heart.

10. A Book Set in a World Where People Are Born With Their Soulmate’s Name Written on Their Skin

What if, from birth, every person has the name of their soulmate written somewhere on their body? The catch is, you can’t see the name until you turn a certain age or undergo a ritual. What happens if someone’s soulmate doesn’t want to be found, or if you’re too afraid to meet them because of past trauma? A love story that explores fate, choice, and the idea of soulmates in a way that goes beyond the traditional tropes.
