Bookish Discussion: Make a Bookish Project – I’m Planning a Bookmark DIY Soon!

Hey, book lovers! 🎨📚

As much as we all love to dive into our favorite stories, sometimes it’s nice to get creative and make something bookish ourselves. Whether you’re looking for a personal touch to add to your reading experience or you want a fun, crafty project to do while binge-watching your latest bookish obsession, DIY book-related crafts are a fantastic way to indulge your passion for books in a new way.

So, what am I planning? A DIY Bookmark Project!

We all know how easy it is to lose track of where we are in a book, and let’s face it, those generic bookmarks just don’t cut it anymore, right? I’m planning to create some personalized bookmarks that not only help me keep my place but also add a little flair to my reading adventures. Here’s a peek into my DIY bookmark plan and why I think you should try it too!

Why Bookmarks?

Bookmarks are essential to every book lover’s toolkit. But why settle for a plain, mass-produced bookmark when you could make one that perfectly reflects your style, personality, or love for a specific book? With so many themes and materials to choose from, DIY bookmarks are a fantastic way to get creative!

My DIY Bookmark Ideas:

Here’s a breakdown of the types of bookmarks I’m thinking about making:

  1. Personalized Quotes: I’ll be using some of my favorite literary quotes to create bookmarks. Think "The world was hers for the reading" (Betty Smith) or “Books are a uniquely portable magic” (Stephen King). I’ll hand-letter them onto card stock or add some fun decorative elements.

  2. Photo Bookmarks: Why not use photos from your favorite book series, characters, or even your own reading journey? You can print out pictures and laminate them to create sturdy, one-of-a-kind bookmarks.

  3. Nature-Inspired Bookmarks: If you’re like me, you probably love bringing the outdoors inside. I’m planning on collecting pressed flowers, leaves, and other nature-inspired elements to make bookmarks that are both earthy and bookish.

  4. Watercolor & Art-Inspired: For a more artistic touch, I’m thinking of experimenting with watercolor paints, acrylics, and even some simple sketches of bookshelves, cozy reading corners, or characters from my favorite novels.

  5. Interactive Bookmarks: I’ve also seen a few fun bookmarks that include little pop-up elements, secret messages, or foldable sections. Imagine a bookmark with a mini book recommendation or a tiny reminder to stay hydrated while reading!

Materials I’ll Be Using:

I’m keeping it simple, but you can get as fancy as you like with materials! Here are a few things I’ll need for this project:

  • Cardstock or thick paper
  • Markers, pens, or watercolors
  • Laminating sheets (for durability)
  • Washi tape for some extra decoration
  • Ribbons or twine to add a cute touch at the top
  • Pressed flowers or glitter (for a magical touch)
  • Scissors, glue, and stickers for embellishing

How I’ll Make Them:

  1. Cut the Base: I’ll start by cutting the cardstock into rectangular strips (around 2 inches by 6 inches) for the bookmark base.
  2. Design the Layout: Next, I’ll sketch out my designs lightly with a pencil before adding color and details with pens or paint.
  3. Add Personal Touches: I’m going to make sure each bookmark reflects my love for books—whether it’s with a favorite quote, a mini painting, or a themed design.
  4. Lamination: To keep them durable, I’ll laminate the bookmarks. This will help them withstand daily use.
  5. Finishing Touches: Finally, I’ll punch a hole at the top and add some decorative ribbon or twine for that extra bit of flair!

What’s Your Bookish DIY Project?

While I’m excited about these bookmarks, I know that there are endless possibilities for bookish crafts. Book sleeves, bookplates, custom bookends, and literary-themed candles are just a few ideas that come to mind. What bookish DIY projects do you have in mind? Do you enjoy crafting while you read or want to try something new?
