#BookReview: House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow has always been strange. Something happened to her and her two older sisters when they were children, something they can’t quite remember but that left each of them with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats.

Iris has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Iris learns just how weird her life can get: horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind.

As Iris retraces Grey’s last known footsteps and follows the increasingly bizarre trail of breadcrumbs she left behind, it becomes apparent that the only way to save her sister is to decipher the mystery of what happened to them as children.

The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years.

My Review:
This one was a haunting and atmospheric young adult thriller that weaves together elements of mystery, horror, and family drama in a compelling narrative.

One of my favorite things about this book was its atmospheric writing and vivid descriptions. Sutherland creates a dark and eerie atmosphere that permeates the entire story, from the haunting streets of London to the mysterious Hollow sisters' unsettling presence. The atmospheric tension adds depth to the narrative, keeping readers on edge and immersed in the unsettling world of the Hollow family.

The Hollow sisters—Iris, Grey, and Vivi—are complex and intriguing protagonists. Their bond as siblings is central to the story, and each sister is fleshed out with distinct personalities and struggles. The dynamics between them, filled with loyalty, secrets, and sibling rivalry, are portrayed with authenticity and depth. Their journey to uncover the truth about their mysterious past and the eerie occurrences surrounding them is gripping and keeps readers guessing until the very end.

The novel's pacing is well-managed, with suspenseful twists and turns that maintain momentum throughout. The plot unfolds at a steady pace, gradually revealing layers of mystery and intrigue. The blending of supernatural elements with psychological suspense adds an extra layer of depth to the story, creating a gripping and memorable reading experience.

Sutherland's exploration of themes such as identity, trauma, and the darkness that lies within us all adds thematic richness to the narrative. These themes are woven seamlessly into the plot, offering thought-provoking reflections on the complexities of human nature.

Overall, "House of Hollow" is a captivating and atmospheric thriller that will appeal to fans of dark and mysterious storytelling. With its compelling characters, atmospheric setting, and suspenseful plot, it delivers a chilling and unforgettable reading experience worthy of a four-star rating.
