My Review: In Topanga Canyon, Southern California, "What The Fire Brings" follows Bailey Meadows, an aspiring private investigator. She joins a writers-in-residence program under thriller author Jack Beckham to help him regain best-seller status but is secretly investigating the disappearance of Sam Morris near Beckham’s property.

Bailey's efforts are complicated by unreliable internet and phone access. As she integrates into the writers' community, she navigates the eerie atmosphere of Beckham’s estate and its enigmatic residents.

The novel starts slowly, with Bailey’s scatterbrained nature and health issues adding confusion. Early chapters with journal entries, dreams, and old police reports build suspense. The story gains momentum around the 65% mark, leading to a thrilling climax as wildfires threaten the canyon.

Rachel Howzell Hall crafts a compelling protagonist in Bailey, whose determination shines despite her flaws. Hall weaves social commentary into the narrative, enhancing its complexity. Despite the slow start, the book’s exciting conclusion and Bailey's rich characterization make it a rewarding read with unexpected twists and high-stakes action in the final third.
