#BookReview: How to Pack for the End of the World by Michelle Falkoff

Synopsis: If you knew the world was going to end tomorrow, what would you do?

This is the question that haunts Amina as she watches new and horrible stories of discord and crisis flash across the news every day.

But when she starts at prestigious Gardner Academy, Amina finds a group of like-minded peers to join forces with—fast friends who dedicate their year to learning survival skills from each other, before it’s too late.

Still, as their prepper knowledge multiplies, so do their regular high school problems, from relationship drama to family issues to friend blow-ups. Juggling the two parts of their lives forces Amina to ask another vital question: Is it worth living in the hypothetical future if it’s at the expense of your actual present?

My Review:
"How to Pack for the End of the World" by Michelle Falkoff presents readers with an ambitious premise that explores themes of survival, family dynamics, and mental health in the face of a global catastrophe. The novel follows Amina, a teenager grappling with the impending end of the world as predicted by her father, a survivalist who has been preparing for the apocalypse for years.

Falkoff's writing is poignant and thought-provoking, delving into complex emotions and relationships with sensitivity and depth. The novel's examination of Amina's struggles with anxiety and depression is particularly compelling, offering a nuanced portrayal of mental illness and its impact on individuals and families. The themes of resilience and hope shine through the narrative, reminding readers of the strength found in human connection and the power of facing adversity together.

However, while the premise is intriguing, the execution of the plot can be uneven at times. The pacing is slow in parts, with the story taking its time to unfold and build momentum. Some readers may find the narrative structure disjointed, with flashbacks and alternating timelines that can be difficult to follow. Additionally, certain plot points feel underdeveloped, and the resolution of conflicts lacks the emotional payoff that the setup promises.

The characters, while well-drawn, could also have been more fully realized. Amina's internal struggles are portrayed with authenticity, but some of the supporting cast feel less fleshed out, their motivations and personalities remaining elusive throughout much of the novel. The romantic subplot, while touching, feels somewhat overshadowed by the larger themes of survival and family dynamics.

Despite these shortcomings, "How to Pack for the End of the World" is a thought-provoking read that will resonate with readers who enjoy introspective and character-driven stories. Michelle Falkoff's exploration of mental illness and resilience adds depth to the narrative, offering moments of insight and empathy. While it may not fully deliver on its ambitious premise, it's a worthwhile read that raises important questions about love, loss, and the human capacity for survival.
