I've survived the first semester in Monstreuse. But my life continues to tangle, just like my budding relationship with Byron, my obnoxious, sorcerer tutor. It turns out my strange powers are tied to the force turning my fellow students into monsters, and that's not awkward at all. And it definitely doesn't put a target on my back.
As Byron and I attempt to unravel the truth about me and help my new friends maintain their humanity, I learn I'm in the middle of plans to change the world--but not for the better--and my fate is closing in. I'll need Byron's help to avoid the worst, but can I reach the real guy that he's hiding behind that confident exterior?

My Review: Ali delves deeper into her powers and nurtures the connections forged during her initial semester at Monstreuse Academy.
The synopsis may suggest a focus on her relationship with Byron and her burgeoning dark magic, but while these elements certainly orbit Ali's narrative, her romantic journey isn't the primary plot. Instead, the crux lies in all her relationships, be they with friends or perceived adversaries. Ali grapples with these connections throughout the story, making them its central theme.
While the first book left me feeling lukewarm, the sequel has won me over. Initially, my continued reading stemmed more from curiosity than a desire to see the story through. However, this installment changed my perspective entirely, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next release—I'm thrilled it's already out.
Belonging solidly in the Young Adult genre, this book is one I wish I had stumbled upon in my youth. I've recommended it to several friends with teenagers, and they're all thoroughly enjoying the series.
