#BookReview: Dreams Lie Beneath by @_RebeccaRoss

Synopsis: A story about magic and the captivating power of dreams.

A curse plagues the realm of Azenor—during each new moon, magic flows from the nearby mountain and brings nightmares to life. Only magicians, who serve as territory wardens, stand between people and their worst dreams.

Clementine Madigan is ready to take over as the warden of her small town, but when two magicians challenge her, she is unwittingly drawn into a century-old conflict. She seeks revenge, but as she secretly gets closer to Phelan, one of the handsome young magicians, secrets begin to rise. Clementine must unite with her rival to fight the realm’s curse, which seems to be haunting her every turn.

My Review:
This was so good! It gripped me from the very first page and I could not put this one down. I loved every page and need more!! I loved the slow progression of the story and the light romance was perfect. I would love to have a book set before this when the curse was actually created. Or even one set long after this to see how their world has changed.

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Every new moon, Clem Madigan patrols the streets of her small town with her father as a dream warden, to fight the nightmares of the townsfolk made real by a curse that plagues the kingdom. That is, until a pair of rival wardens win guardianship of their town in a challenge, leaving Clem's father to return to his estranged wife in the city, Clem in tow. Refusing to let the theft of her home go unpunished, Clem devises a plan to disguise herself and take revenge on the rival wardens-only to realize that there are much deeper machinations afoot. With the atmosphere and pacing of a fairy tale, but with a milder form of the political maneuvering more popular in modern fantasy, this is simultaneously reminiscent of both Caraval and Finale by Stephanie Garber. Clem and her rival wardens are well rounded, although the rapidity with which the plot unfolds leaves character depth relatively unexplored. The combination of mystery, magic, action, and intrigue is quite a bit to pack into one book, but Ross maintains an excellent balance throughout that will satisfy even the most selective fantasy readers. For the most part, characters are cued white. VERDICT A strong addition to collections where fantasy is popular.-Austin Ferraro, Brambleton Lib./Loudoun County P.L., Brambleton, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

“Ross has spun a lyrical web of rivals and romance in a lush, sweeping world where dangers lurk, secrets are guaranteed, and trusting anyone is a mistake you’ll make only the once. Ideal.” -- Ciannon Smart, author of Witches Steeped in Gold

“Gorgeous, deftly plotted, and utterly unexpected,
Dreams Lie Beneath is an atmospheric tale filled with lush details and dark magic. A beautiful story, equal parts thrilling and romantic, and helmed by a strong-willed heroine who had my support and sympathies from the first page." -- Isabel Ib >ñez, author of Woven in Moonlight

“An imaginative mythology distinguishes this stand-alone fantasy. Abundant intrigue, escalating romantic tension, and twisty plotting keeps readers on their toes.” --
Publishers Weekly

“Clementine is rash, bold, and confident, and the inevitable romance that seems fated from almost first sight is still quite welcome. Well-developed and memorable.” -- Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books
