#BookReview: Breaking Time by Sasha Alsberg

Synopsis: Fate brought them together. Time will tear them apart.

When a mysterious Scotsman appears out of nowhere in the middle of the road, Klara thinks the biggest problem is whether she hit him with her car. But, as impossible as it sounds, Callum has stepped out of another time, and it’s just the beginning of a deadly adventure.

Klara will soon learn that she is the last Pillar of Time—an anchor point in the timeline of the world and a hiding place for a rogue goddess’s magic. Callum is fated to protect her at all costs. A dark force is hunting for the Pillars, to claim the power of the goddess—and Klara and Callum are the only two standing in the way. Thrown together by fate, the two have to learn to trust one another and work together…but they'll need to protect their hearts from one another if they're going to survive.

My Review: After reading Zenith and loving it I did kind of wonder how much of that story writing was Aslberg and how much was Cummings and now I think I have my answer.  This fan fiction retelling of Outlander failed on so many counts.  The characters sucked and were super flat and the story was just a mess.  I am almost going to say that Inkyard press did us dirty.  They published this because they knew with Alsberg's following the book would sell.  But I wonder how many returns of this book are going to crop up once people actually read it.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-The year is 1568. In the flash of an instant, in a dark alley, young Scots boxer Callum sees his best friend Thomas attacked by a man hidden behind a dark hood. Rushing to help, Callum hits the man only to be thrown back; finally, with luck, he gains the advantage but then the earth falls away and he falls into a vast light. Meanwhile, Klara, an American running an inn with her father in present-day Scotland, is distractedly driving into town. Noticing something in the road ahead she discovers a young man, dressed oddly and obviously stunned. Klara takes Callum to her home where they try to discover what happened, why, and what to do next. Seeking advice from her grandmother who is wise in the ways of ancient Scots traditions, Klara discovers that she is the final "Pillar"-a link between time. The man who killed Thomas is also a beast who desires the power that resides within Klara and he is determined to send her to the Other World where she will be kept prisoner throughout time. While Callum is certain that his destiny is to help Klara, having failed to save Thomas, he is unsure of his ability to do so; Klara, although confused by her newly discovered status, is determined to live up to her destiny. Action-packed, romantic, and realistic time period descriptions engage readers. VERDICT Give this book to fantasy readers; they'll eagerly await the next book following this one's abrupt ending.-Connie Williamsα(c) Copyright 2011.
