#BookReview: The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

Synopsis: In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters--James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna--join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.

My Review: I don't think after this one I will be trying anymore books by Harrow. I thought I would have a better time with this one but I just didn't. I was hoping that since this one was about witches that I would fall head over heels for it but sadly that didn't happen.  I just think that Harrow's writing just isn't for me.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2020: Women’s suffrage and underground witchcraft spin together into an electrifying tale of three magical sisters living in the town of New Salem in 1893, fighting for equality and safety in a world that has denied them both those things. Harrow’s sophomore novel, The Once and Future Witches, proves she’s a writer to watch—and one who is willing to shake up the typical fantasy motifs even as she leans into cherished fairy tales and myths. This imaginative and deeply satisfying reckoning will add new readers to Harrow’s swiftly growing pool of fans. —Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review

"The magical tale of imperfect heroines, fractured sisterhood, and shadowy undying villains you never knew you needed. Alix Harrow crafts a delightfully bewitching story with familiar but ingeniously recrafted histories and deft worldbuilding as rich as the prose that leaps off the page. This book is an amazing bit of spellcraft and resistance so needed in our times, and a reminder that secret words and ways can never be truly and properly lost, as long as there are tongues to speak them and ears to listen."―P. Djèlí Clark, author The Black God's Drum
