At the end of Caesar's feline life, he makes a deal with the goddess Zosma to rejoin Ophelia, the girl he loves, for his ninth and final life.
However, waking in the body of seventeen-year-old Austin Price isn't what he anticipates. Neither is Austin's handsome roommate, Cooper—a boy who moves him in unexpected ways. And coming face-to-face with a messy past Austin can't remember living makes being human even harder than he thought.
The chaos and wonder of his ninth life urges Austin to get to know Ophelia on human terms, and sends him stumbling into complicated friendships that might mean more to him than he ever imagined. But his wish has a price, and even as Austin is pulled in two impossible directions, the very heart beating in his chest is on a countdown of its own—a countdown he has no control over.
This is a unique and beautifully written contemporary-fabulist story with romantic and heartbreaking moments, and a strong happy ever after.

My Review: This was a very interesting book about love and loss. I loved the dynamic between Missy and Caesar and the story was just so good. This book will be one that you don't forget after you read it. It was hard in parts to get through it because of animal death. However, the author does a great job with dealing with anxiety, grief, and more.
Review
"Fiercely imaginative and moving... Barton has spun a story unlike any I've read; a tale of identity, humanity, and love as limitless as the stars." --Rebecca Podos, Lambda award-winning author of Like Water
"Effortlessly capturing the angst of teen relationships and the complicated ways that emotions manifest and connect us, Barton's inventive, magical novel is a once-in-a-lifetime read." --Rachel Strolle, Teen Services Coordinator, Glenside Public Library District
"A magical and emotional whirlwind, The Ninth Life will speak to the heart and resonate with those looking for a place to belong. Austin, who has led many lives and most recently lived as a cat, returns in his ninth life to the girl he loves, only to also fall in love with a boy. Taylor B. Barton navigates love, finding family and defining your own destiny in this soft queer triumph of a book." -- CB Lee, author of The Sidekick Squad
"The Ninth Life is such a cool story! I was hooked i the characters and the book's depiction of love and attraction. What really captured my heart, though, was Missy and Caesar--funkiest low-key dynamic duo ever!" --M-E Girard, Lambda Award-winning author of Girl Mans Up
