Shrouded by dense trees and murky tides, the island appears uninhabited, although the kids can't quite shake the feeling that something about it is off. Their suspicions grow when they stumble upon an abandoned houseboat with an array of curiosities inside: odd-looking weapons, unnerving portraits, maps to places they've never heard of, and a glass jar containing something completely unidentifiable.
As the group delves deeper into the unknown, their discoveries - and their lives -begin to intertwine in weird and creepy ways. Something ancient has awakened... and it knows their wishes and dreams - and their darkest, most terrible secrets. Do they have what it takes to face the shadowy things that lurk within their own hearts?

My Review: I really loved the cover because it really matched the story. The boat going into the tunnel was perfect for the front of the book. The opened really pulled me into the story and made me want to read more. The beginning and the ending were great but I kind of got lost in the middle. Things that happened were a little confusing for me when I had to stop reading and restart. But hey I am only 8 so that could just be me. I thought the pacing was pretty slow but I really like the pacing becuase, I thought it fit the story to allow things to unfold at a better base instead of speeding through it.
This book was in dual POV of Nico and Opal. I really enjoyed Opal's POV more because, took charge of situations when others didn't know what to do. Like when she decided that everyone was going to go back to the house boat and talk about the Dark Deep. I kind of didn't like Nico. I mean he was fine but, he just really didn't take charge of anything and was more a follower.
The story was wonderful. I really loved the parts about the Dark Deep and the tunnels. I really can't wait to start book two. This one ended on a cliffhanger so I am very happy that I have book two for review.
