Welcome to this weeks Interview! This week we have author Jenna Greene. Jenna Greene is a middle school teacher in Alberta, Canada. She lives with her husband, daughter, and dog Thor: Dog of Thunder.
- What is your name, where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Burnaby, British Columbia (Go Canada!) I grew up in a few different Vancouver-area cities. Since I was nine, I have lived in Lethbridge, Alberta.
- Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I wanted to be a fairy princess for a long time (and still hold that as an ambition) but writer is a close second option.
- Did it take a long time to get your first book published?
I started seriously writing when I was in university. I think it took about a decade to get the manuscripts polished and published.
- Do you work another job as well as your writing work?
I am a grade 6 teacher in Taber, Alberta.
5. Do you have a "lucky charm" or "lucky routine" you follow when waiting for your book to be accepted by a publisher?
I don’t have a ‘lucky charm’ when I’m waiting for a response to a publisher, but I do have a ‘lucky charm’ when I’m writing: I wear a sparkly tiara. My husband knows when I’m wearing a tiara, that it isn’t time to ask me where something is in the house. Every time I publish a new book, I get to buy a new tiara.
6. How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
If I start a project in the summer, when I’m not teaching, the process goes a lot quicker. Generally, I can get a first draft finished in 3-4 months. Editing has lots of steps and phases, and that takes about a year.
7.Which of your books were easier/harder to write than the others?
I have a new YA book coming out in January that was both the easiest and hardest to write. It flowed well and captured themes that I didn’t even intend. Half of it was written while my mother was dying, and the other half was written once she passed. There’s a lot of emotion in the pages, and some scenes were very emotional to write.
8. What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
I love YA too much to ever abandon it, though I might pen a middle-grade book one day. I like fantasy and dystopian, and I feel I have good skills in those types of books.
9. Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
The novel REBORN, which is being released in January, is the first in a new series. It is about a girl named Lexil who has memory marks on her face, which means she is connected to the past. Since not all are lucky enough to live more than once, she is forced into slavery.
10. Do you have a favorite character from your books? and why are they your favorite?
From my IMAGINE series, of course I love all my characters, but I do have two favourites: Alana and Petie, the sibling Brownies. They are innocence and wisdom and joy wrapped into twin tiny packages.
11. If you had to choose to be one of your characters in your book/books which would you be? and why?
Without a doubt, I’m Becky Thatcher from the IMAGINE series. She is creative and hopeful and kind.
