Thirty years ago, dark magicians unleashed new power on the earth fueled by demons. Governments toppled, millions died and magicians ended up on top of the food chain.
Twenty-four-year-old Becca survives these dangerous times by relying on her wits, her fists, and the limited goodwill of her boss, a local crime lord. When news comes of a fire back home and the family she left behind dead, she realizes her dark past has finally caught up to her.
On the hunt for her missing sister, she must rely on Darion, a treacherous ex-boyfriend with ties to the local coven for back-up. Problem is he’s a pyromancer that can’t be trusted, especially with her heart. Will she escape the sticky web of treachery and deceit with her sister and her heart, or will she sacrifice it all to save another?
Noteworthy experiences while reading this book: I was not expecting much as I read it, honestly, and at first I thought it would barely meet even that low bar. I was actually VERY pleasantly surprised, for the most part.
Recommend this book? Sure!
The whole concept of the end of the world as we know it being marked by people being able to utilize magic is one I have read before, but not in the "oh and we can raise demons from hell and control them" kind of way. That was what got me interested in the first place and I have no regrets.
Just enough bad crap happens to keep the story from ever getting dull, but unlike some authors who seem to think a book should be nothing but bad crap happening to the characters, enough goes their way to keep it from dragging readers down. They're even able to manage a couple days of peace and quiet to focus on a certain issue I won't put here because MEGA SPOILER. That was actually nice to read, since they all nearly died at one point.
Unfortunately, this book lost a star for the stupid love triangle. I hate love triangles. I really, really hate love triangles. They're stupid and poorly contrived and annoying as hell and this one was not really any different.
Also DEAR GOD THE LOVE TRIANGLES AGAIN.
