#BookReview: Before She Ignites (Fallen Isles Trilogy #1) by @jodimeadows

Before

Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the peace treaty named after her, an agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.

But Mira never felt perfect. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

After

Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit—the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.

No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles—and herself—before her very world begins to collapse.

This was the book from the September Owlcrate and although I did enjoy the book I wish it wouldn't have been sold as a dragon book. For the simple reason that the dragons although there take a back seat to the story at large.

We do get to see them a little but not in the way you would think for a book that for the most part was supposed to be about dragons.  At least that is what I have been told. (if I am wrong please let me know)

The story was well told but could have been shortened.  I really wish that the MC would have been in prison for months vs. days and that some of the middle sections of this of days passing could have been taken out as we just didn't need them.  This story is told over the course of about two months in the present time and then we get some backstory as well to what lead up to the MC going to prison in the first place.  Although all that worked I do think that this 481-page story could have been way shorter.  The time jumps worked well for this one. I really enjoyed not knowing off the bat why she was in jail.  It gave the book a sort of mystery and build up for the reveal.

The characters were great I really liked the MC although she was very vain she learned to stand up for herself and for those she cared about. I do hope to read the next book in the series as this one was good. But I hope that the next book we see more of the other side characters Ie. the dragons.

The world building in this one was slight. Although we do have different areas most of the book takes place in the prison. So there really isn't much that can be done.  The nice thing about that is that we don't have to rely on massive amounts of descriptions.  We get to know the prison and then that's it. The rest of the descriptions are all for the story at large which worked well.
