Helena Coggan wrote the first draft of The Catalyst when she was thirteen, and it has already been published in the U.K. to great acclaim. She has wanted to write stories since she was six, and before that, she wanted to live in one. She lives with her family in London.
This book is about otherworldly souls rained down and fused with the humans. This divided the society into green-eyed magical Gifted and dark-eyed non gifted Ashkind. A war then erupts and there has been a peace ever since. Rose and her father David are both gifted and something else. Something dangerous. Their whole life revolves around this a secret. But when a murder threatens to unravel Roses' whole world her loyalties are put to the test. She is forced to question everything she thought she knew. Unfortunately I had some issues with this book. My biggest problem with this book is that the characters felt very flat and one dimensional. There was nothing spectacular about anyone of them . My Next issue is that the world building in the beginning could be improved. I don't get the sense that I'm in this world with the characters. This story was very slow in the beginning and was very hard to get into. My last issue with this book is that there is so much description of particular scenes and not enough action. A lot of "saying" instead of "doing".
