In this thrilling sequel to World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott's captivating young adult debut, a girl immersed in high-stakes competition holds the fate of a kingdom in her hands. Now a Challenger, Jessamy is moving up the ranks of the Fives--the complex athletic contest favored by the lowliest Commoners and the loftiest Patrons alike. Pitted against far more formidable adversaries, success is Jes's only option, as her prize money is essential to keeping her hidden family alive. She leaps at the chance to tour the countryside and face more competitors, but then a fatal attack on her traveling party puts Jes at the center of the war that Lord Kalliarkos--the prince she still loves--is fighting against their country's enemies. With a sinister overlord watching her every move and Kal's life on the line, Jes must now become more than a Fives champion.... She must become a warrior.

Well this book takes the story to a new level. This book is for ages 16 and up to say the least. With murder and higher situations it's not for the faint of heart. At one point towards the end I almost put it down. This could be called The Game of Thrones for teens. All they needed was a dragon or two.
This is a great story with hints of magic. This one picks up right where book one left off and it doesn't end on a cliffhanger. So that was great. All the characters we loved from book one are back. Each are slowing growing into their selves becoming the person they should be.
In this one we see Jes make some very stupid and costly mistakes that I hope in book three she will fully learn not to make them again. As she has seen what happens that people can be killed from your own stupidity.
As for our wonderful Kal I was glad to see him step it up and be a man. He was such a whinny child in book one. In this I think everyone will be happy and a little surprised on what they find.
As for the story I really love where it's going. That this is not just a story about our lovely Jes and her family. But also about those who have been treated like dirt will rise up. How people will rise to take back what is theirs. Because in the end
Efea will rise!
