Biography

Susan Dennard is a writer, reader, lover of animals, and eater of cookies. She used to be a marine biologist, but now she writes novels. And not novels about fish either, but novels about kick-butt heroines and swoon-worthy rogues (she really likes swoon-worthy rogues).

She lives in the Midwest with her French husband and Irish setter, and her debut, SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY, is now available from HarperTeen.

My Review-5 Stars

Must Read

O to live in a world where those fences around the cemeteries are to keep the dead in.  Eleanor lives in a world where sometimes the dead don't stay that way.  But now instead of the occasional dead rising out of its grave. They have an entire cemetery to deal with.  When this book began I thought it was going to be on the funny side.  As Eleanor is delivered a letter by non other than a Zombie.  I just thought that sounded funny.  But, this story is far from humorous.  It tells the tale of a girl who doesn't act like a lady, Zombies are running a muck, and a brother who has gone missing.  Toss in some light romance, a few more zombies, and some magic and you have this book summed up pretty well.

I have to say that I did love this one.  Its one of those books that almost anything can happen to the main cast.  And that makes the book even more real!  So don't think that just because there are zombies and magic that you won't be drawn into this dark, mysterious read!

I have to say that I really did love the characters.  Eleanor, Daniel, Jia, and Joseph were great!  I did think that the plot was a little predictable no matter how much the author tried to make it not.  The world building was AWESOME!  Taking a time when it was common knowledge that sometimes live people get buried and turning it into a zombie book was great!  It was one of those things that makes you think.  Wow why didn't I think of that?!

Dont worry about getting lost in this one as the writing is very straight forward and easy to follow.  You won't get lost!  The POV is all in one person so there is no jumping around.  The ending was unexpected and I have to say I didn't see it coming.

This was a perfect blend of fantasy, steampunk, and well the dead!

Darkness has come to the City of Light. . . .
With her brother dead and her mother on the verge of insanity, Eleanor Fitt is utterly alone. Even the Spirit-Hunters—Joseph, Jie, and the handsome, enigmatic Daniel—have fled to Paris. So when Eleanor begins to hear the vicious barking of hounds and see images of haunting yellow eyes, she fears the worst—that the Dead, and the necromancer Marcus, are coming for her.
To escape and search out the Spirit-Hunters, Eleanor boards a steamer bound for France. There she meets Oliver, a young man who claims to have known her brother. Though friendly, Oliver entices Eleanor with necromancy and black magic, yet as long as she can resist his powerful temptation, she'll be fine. But when she arrives in Paris, she finds that the Dead have taken over the city . . . and there's a whole new evil lurking. With the body count rising, Eleanor is forced to make a deadly decision that will go against everything the Spirit-Hunters stand for.
In Paris, there's a price for this darkness strange and lovely . . . and it may have Eleanor paying with her life.
In this spellbinding sequel to Something Strange and Deadly, Susan Dennard delivers a thrilling mix of intrigue, romance, and revenge, all set against the wonderfully enchanting backdrop of nineteenth-century Paris.

I love zombies. They're are one of my favorite paranormal creatures.

Thanks for the giveaway, I have been wanting to read this series by Susan Dennard but I haven't had the chance yet!! :)

I read this one when it first came out so my memory on it is a little fuzzy. I remember liking it though so I'll continue on with the series

I have heard really good things about this series. I love that it is not confusing. A few zombie books I have read were a little hard to follow.

I think 5 stars makes this a book I need to read.
